Budapest in 48 hours – part one

From touch down to push off of our river cruise, we had exactly 48 hours to experience Budapest.  I was surprised by how much we both loved it.  Vow to go back one day!!   It’s like if you mixed up a little berlin, prague, and paris.  We didn’t get to see or do it all, but we just liked the whole vibe of the city. But I do think we saw quite a bit for just having two days.

After arriving at the airport, we took a taxi cab to Four Seasons Budapest.  We both got cleaned up and had a reservation at Aszu.  I don’t generally have terrible jet lag coming over to Europe because I think I’m just too excited to sleep.  Before dinner we had an appetizer along the danube, then walked to Aszu.  Aszu was our favorite meal of the trip!  It has a modern hungarian menu and the service was really excellent.  We had a night cap at the hotel bar, Kollazs.

The next morning after breakfast JB walked across the chain bridge while I headed to the spa and got ready.

JB loves nothing more in life than street food.  He even risked our families life in St Lucia for some street food.  I’m being a touch dramatic but also kind of not.  haha.  Anyway, it was Saturday and the entire avenue of Andrassy was shut down for food stalls and picnic tables in the road.  It was basically haven for him.  It went on and on.  All of the food trucks were SO cute.  I ended up having a green smoothie, and a falafel hummus bowl like someone had recommended I do, while JB had some more traditional hungarian food.  Then we both shared a beer.  It was delicious and just such a fun place to people watch.

That afternoon a tuk tuk picked us up at our hotel and gave us a tour.  We booked with Budapest TukTuk.  If you are going to Budapest, out of everything to do, I’d say book this tour.  It’s a fun way to see a lot of the gorgeous city.   Our driver told us lots of interesting history, and even gave us recommendations on where to eat.

fishermans bastion Fisherman’s Bastion was stunning.  It’s really one of those places that just makes your jaw drop.   gresham palace chain bridge view We booked a dunarama boat tour which was so so so dreamy!  The views from the boat are gorgeous.  My only regret is that we didn’t go closer to sunset.

That night we got dressed up for dinner. Then we changed because we wanted to go to a ruin bar.  It’s basically an area of the city that was in ruins so the idea was to make it safe and able to operate.  We went to Szimpla, which was not our scene (we walked in and walked out) … has less to do with us being old and more to do that it was just crazy in there.  But it was an experience!  We ended up visiting some others in that area for late night bites.   There are a bunch of ruin bars all around that area in the Jewish Quarter.

… I’ll share part two of Budapest next!
