Tips for hosting this easter

Last year I hosted Easter at our home.  We just returned home from our spring break the day before, and to be honest, I was in over my skis!  We invite my in laws, and my siblings, their families, and parents.  

1.  Delegate.  Especially on a holiday.  It’s a lot to clean your house, set the table, do the arrangements, so cut corners where you can.  When we’re hosting family for a big holiday like Easter, we cook the turkey/ham/tenderloin… make sure we have appetizers ready when guests arrive.  And we kindly ask that others bring sides!  It takes some pressure off.  
2. Plan ahead.  Do everything you can do ahead of time ASAP.  Get a little timeline going.  We like to host either a lunch right after church, or an early dinner.  I personally prefer the early dinner because you have a few hours to recover from The Easter bunny and the excitement at church.  
3. Make sure to note any dietary allergies and label what’s DF/GF.  I like to keep a running list in my notes app on my phone.  I have one for friends and one for family.  When you’re delegating sides you can ask people to avoid certain ingredients.  There’s so many good alternatives these days that I think it’s reasonable to ask.  Especially when it’s a medical condition.  
4. I always say, be at ease, and your guests will be too.  Pray, meditate, have a cocktail – whatever it takes.  Maybe do all three.  
5. Set up a little bar.  Make sure to have alcoholic and non alcoholic options.  But it’s fun to have a little station with all of the fixings!  And of course, iced tea and lemonade.
6. This is a very me specific thing, but turn on all of the lamps.  just say no to overhead lighting.  I feel like it creates such a warm and cozy vibe. 
7. For a party this size, I like to have a buffet to serve the food.  
8. Make sure you have extra serving utensils on hand.  Likely someone won’t think of it!  
9. Two things that lighten the mood – these superlative placecards, and we always have fun with a surprise celebrity cut out mask.  You just tuck this under their plate with the face side down.  Have everyone guess who they are.  It’s sure to make everyone laugh! 
10. Do the things that you love, and delegate what you’re not wild about.  You don’t enjoy doing flowers? I bet there’s someone that loves it that’s coming to the party.
