Lighting on a Budget

lighting on a budgetI am always amazed by how switching out lighting can makes such a difference for a room.  Each of these rooms, save the last one — that’s what previous owners think to be an original to the house  — had new lighting put in, which was key in transforming the space.  It sort of set the tone, since it’s more permanent than other things.  A friend of mine who works for RH mentioned checking out RH baby and child, for lighting.  Their lighting works well in our old home.   You get the look of RH but in the size (and price!) that fits.  Since that time they have done away with these exact versions.  Though this one is a similar pendant and a similar chandelier.    The other lighting we replaced was in the breakfast nook right off the kitchen.  We went with this beaded chandelier from World Market.  I’d also say, of course, you must look at measurements, especially if buying from RH baby and child or pottery barn kids to ensure it fits the scale of your room.  Our highest ceiling is ten feet, which is pretty tall, but some of the newer houses seem to have much higher ceilings.

I absolutely can’t live without a fan at night.  Even when it’s cold, I still want the air movement and the white noise it gives off.  So we won’t be able to put a beautiful chandelier in our room but I am looking at this pretty craftmade fan, which I think would complement our bedroom well.  Though the reviews aren’t the most promising…

There’s still a lot of light fixtures that need replacing — a couple of “boob” lighting fixtures here and there throughout the house,   track lighting in the kitchen (not sure what to replace this with!), and the fans upstairs.

Here are a few lighting options I’m loving, all under $400.  Though if you are in need of an even quicker fix – lowes, home depot, and ikea (this ikea one I LOVE!!) all have great options and even better prices.
