The Southern Living article about our home is out, and you can pick up a copy in stores! This was shot back in April of last year, and it was just in general a wild ride. We had just bought the little blue house, and we were in the process of furnishing it. Because of that, I moved a ton of our own furniture over there. Leaving our home pretty bare for when southern living came calling. I feel like it always happens like that, right? things happen all at once. Or it feels like that. Even though in reality the seeds have been planted, dreams dreamed, and God has a sense of humor about it all. For the millionth time God lets me know – I’m not in control. Truly, if it was up to me, I’d never have been ready. This home will forever be a work in progress. And so will I.
We drove by our house 9 years ago, when we were on escrow on another little house on the same block. I can vividly remember saying “that’s a forever a home” and even “that looks straight out of southern living”. I think a little dream sort of started right then. Fast forward to the home we were in escrow on never closing because of a short sale, and us walking through this house. Proof of one door closing, and another one opening.
Old houses are a big responsibility. Gosh, a house of any age is a responsibility. But old ones there is some kind of maintenance. You have to love it. And we do. I love coming home to it, I love the stability its given our kids and life, I love when the jasmine starts to bloom, I love the old windows and beat up baseboards that we somehow never prioritize getting painted. This old home grounds our family. It’s welcoming, warm, messy, and never finished – kinda just like us. It’s been a baptist parsonage, a malaria hospital in the 20s … it’s hosted one known wedding, countless baby showers, bible studies, book club dinners, bridal showers and birthdays. It’s seen a lot! Happy times, and held us in hard times. It’s a privilege to be its current stewards and to call it home. I’m so happy it is having its day in the sun on southern living.
Big Thank you to Alison Gootee for photographing the home for SL and Dakota Willimon for styling!
And if you are new here, WELCOME! I love this little spot on the internet, and making my house a home is one of my favorite things.
