I can’t believe I’ve been a soccer mom for over ten years. I still vividly remember John’s very first “practice” (he was barely two, so I’m using that term loosely!). Over the years—and through countless days and nights on soccer and baseball fields—I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way, like how to keep your car organized during a busy season. Today, I’m sharing the essentials our boys use before and after games, the sports mom must-haves I never leave home without, and some of my go-to sideline outfit ideas.

Becoming a Sports Mom

Those early days of soccer practices mostly consisted of parents chasing toddlers around while they occasionally completed a drill. It was such a fun and sweet season—watching the boys experience their very first taste of being on a team. And honestly, it still is!

Fast forward ten years, and both of our boys now play in competitive soccer leagues that take us all over the state. Just this past weekend, John had his first game at the ESPN facilities inside Walt Disney World. As I watched him play, I couldn’t help but think back to that little toddler kicking a soccer ball into a tiny goal.

How to Prep for Game Days

The weather was incredibly hot during last weekend’s games. Even just sitting on the sidelines, Wes and I were sweating—while John was running nonstop in the heat for 75 minutes!

I wasn’t as prepared as I usually am, so I ended up ordering a few new items and restocking my bag for next weekend. That little scramble made me realize it might be helpful to share some tried-and-true soccer mom advice here. So, let’s chat about what I keep in my bag and what I like to wear on game days! Whether you’re a newly minted sports mom, or a seasoned one, I hope this helps you be prepared.

Pre-Game Essentials for Kids

First up, let’s make sure your athletes are ready for the game. These are a few essentials we always rely on to keep our boys hydrated, fueled, and prepped on game days:

  1. Lots of water: Whether it’s hot or cold outside, a huge ice-cold water jug is a must. Before the game, I have the boys drink water with added electrolytes. During the game, they stick to plain water, and afterward, we follow up with more electrolytes.
  2. Snacks: Frozen grapes, watermelon, and orange slices are our go-to snacks for before and after games. They’re refreshing, light, and kid-approved.
  3. Sun protection: Sunscreen is non-negotiable. I prefer this mineral formula since it seems to last through both sweat and dirt.
  4. Bags: Our kids carry a team soccer bag, but I added this bag tag to make it easier to spot (and harder to lose). Inside, I also stash a smell-proof cleat bag—trust me, it’s a game-changer for those stinky shoes!

Sports Mom: Whats in My Bag

Speaking of bags—every mom knows there’s no limit to how many you’ll need to juggle all the mom things. And don’t even get me started on how much you can actually fit inside one bag! It’s just part of the job, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

That said, my mom bag is huge. And as I was reminded last weekend, if it’s not fully stocked, I end up regretting it. Here are some of the essentials I always keep inside:

  1. Clear pouches: Since my bag is so large, things can easily get “lost” inside. To keep everything organized (and easy to find in a pinch), I use these clear pouches. They come in a pack of five, and I use them to separately store a mini first aid kit, packaged snacks, sunscreen, and my portable mini fan + misting sprays.
  2. Portable cooler: I like to pack my own lunch for game days—usually something simple like a salad—so I don’t have to rely on whatever food options happen to be nearby. (Sometimes the pickings are slim!) I always bring along a small portable cooler filled with my water bottle, sparkling waters, and snacks for everyone. P.S. This is my current favorite water bottle—it has a leakproof lid that locks and unlocks, which makes it perfect for the sidelines.
  3. Trusty chair: This portable chair is my go-to for game days, especially on hot afternoons. When it’s chilly, I add a heated stadium seat cushion on top. My girlfriend gifted it to me for my birthday last year, and it has kept me so toasty during our chilly game days.
  4. Blanket: On these chilly days, a warm blanket is an absolute essential. ChappyWraps are my go-to—they’re cozy, stylish, and machine-washable.
  5. Umbrella: I never leave home without an umbrella in my mom bag. It’s a must for rainy days, but it’s also perfect for providing shade on hot afternoons.

Sports Mom Style: What to Wear on Game Days

Now for one of my favorite parts—let’s talk about what moms can wear on game days! I’ve put together a few outfit ideas for both hot and chilly weather. Of course, some days fall somewhere in between—consider yourself lucky on those days!

While I’m focusing on soccer mom outfits, all of these looks work just as well for any outdoor sporting event—or even for running weekend errands!

Denim Shorts + Casual Top

One of my go-to weekend looks is a trusty pair of denim shorts worn with a casual top. These high-waisted, distressed jean shorts are some of my absolute favorites—they’re flattering, the length is perfect, and they’re appropriate for game days. On top, a relaxed pique polo is ideal for the sidelines: classic, comfortable, and available in lots of great colors. Finish the look with a cute baseball cap and your favorite pair of sneakers.

Active Top + Lounge Shorts

This is a perfect sports mom look for really hot days—comfortable, but still put together. I own these lounge shorts in a few colors; they’re soft, breathable, and have a longer, modest length. The fitted tee is just as comfy, and the functional fabric is anti-odor, making it ideal for a hot day. Don’t forget to pack a sunhat, sunscreen, a fan, and some electrolytes to beat the heat!

Lounge Set with Layers

On chilly game days, I’m all about layering. My go-to is a comfy lounge set over a soft tee, topped with a jacket or coat. If it warms up, you can always shed a layer or two—but it’s better to be safe than sorry. And don’t forget a warm blanket to stay cozy on the sidelines!

Ribbed Set + Raincoat

Inevitably, some game days will be rainy. On those days, I like to reach for a cozy yet elevated lounge set. I love this ribbed sweatshirt and joggers—they keep me warm when it’s chilly, but won’t overheat me if the sun comes out later. For outerwear, two of my favorites are this oversized waterproof jacket and this more fitted raincoat. Roll a ChappyWrap blanket into your tote, and you’ll be ready for anything the weather throws your way!
