We’re headed to Washington, D.C., as a family for a long weekend soon, and I’m so excited! I haven’t been to the capital since visiting a girlfriend there in my twenties. Fast forward almost twenty years… and now we’re headed back with kids! I think my boys are the perfect age for their first visit, and it feels extra exciting since this is America’s 250th year.
I’ve been having so much fun planning everywhere we’re going to visit. We’ve already mapped out lots of fun activities and at least one nice dinner out. And now, of course, I’m starting to think about what to pack!
Since this trip is taking place around Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer, I’ll be keeping things classic with lots of Americana vibes — navy, creams, blues, and pops of red. Honestly, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with this color palette when visiting the capital, no matter the time of year!
What to Wear in Washington, D.C.
With that said, I thought it might be helpful to walk through some of the Washington, D.C. outfits I have planned. Not only are these looks great if you also have an upcoming trip, but they’re wonderful summer outfits in general. After all, I always come back to the classics!
Washington Nationals Game Outfit
We’re planning to attend a Washington Nationals baseball game during the trip, so naturally I had to lean into a classic red color palette with touches of gingham for a full-on Americana vibe.
This red gingham top is truly perfect and would look great styled with everything from a favorite pair of white jeans to classic blue denim shorts. I plan to pack this red cropped jacket in case I get chilly (this one is selling fast!).
I’ll complete the look with some of my trusted neutral accessories — a chic belt, stunning drop earrings, and perfect neutral flats. Add in this $34 red gingham tote for one more fun pop of print, and I’ll be ready to cheer from the stands!
Shopping & Museums OutfitÂ
Next up, this is a look I plan to wear for a day of shopping and museum hopping. Needless to say, there will be a lot of walking and temperature changes from going both indoors and outdoors. I definitely kept this in mind when planning an elevated yet comfortable outfit.
I always find a timeless shirtdress to be both incredibly flattering and comfortable, and this navy one is truly a stunner. I plan to layer this classic striped cardigan on top for chilly indoor AC. And for the ultimate comfort shoe that still keeps me stylish, I’ll be bringing these tried-and-true wrap sandals.
For accessories, this red stripe bag is such a fun pop of color (you can use code SARAH15 for 15% off!). And these chic sunglasses and timeless gold hoop earrings pull the entire look together.
Spy Museum & Warf Outfit
We’re also planning to explore the Spy Museum and The Wharf, so I put together another elevated casual look. These are all pieces that I wear on repeat individually, so it will be fun to style them together!
These striped pants are the centerpiece of the whole look. They’re such a fun take on a classic style! I plan to pair them with my go-to white boyfriend tee and this blue cashmere sweater layered over top.
For shoes, I’m packing another wrap sandal, but this time in navy — such a fun way to add a pop of blue for summer! This woven bag and dainty necklace are two more blue favorites I’ll be packing as well.
Dinner Outfit for Georgetown
Lastly, I put together a fun look for a dinner out in Georgetown. This dupioni silk pants and tunic set always makes me feel chic and elevated. I own it in multiple colors and constantly reach for the pieces — they’re so beautiful and flattering!
I plan to complete the look with pops of gold, including these unique floral earrings, this gold appliqué bag from Zara, and these gold strappy sandals. And I’ll pull it all together with this blue and gold bracelet, which you can get 20% off with code 20-SARAH.
