Fall Capsule Wardrobe: 32 Classic Pieces to Wear On Repeat

As a lover of classic style, it’s no surprise that I also enjoy putting together seasonal wardrobes. While I can appreciate adding a few trendy pieces to my closet every now and then, for the most part, I believe in sticking to timeless style that can be mixed, matched, and worn for years to come. The fall capsule collection that I shared last year was a hit, so I figured it would be fun to freshen it up a bit for 2024. After searching through all of my favorite brands’ new arrivals, I was able to put together this year’s fall capsule wardrobe. And I’m so excited to talk through the pieces I selected today!

Benefits of a Fall Capsule Wardrobe

I know capsule collections aren’t for everyone, but I do think they can be useful. Am I going to only wear these exact pieces this fall? No. Will these items be ones that I wear repeatedly through the season? Yes. I like to think of a clothing capsule as a small collection or list of styles that you have in your closet and can easily grab to wear on any given day. They are pieces that you don’t have to put much thought into because you know they make you look and feel great. These should also be items that you can style in multiple ways, getting the most bang for your buck.

Steps to Creating a Fall Clothing Capsule

If this is your first time putting together a fall clothing capsule, it might seem a bit overwhelming to start. However, I promise that it’s really not that difficult at all! Here are the main steps I follow when creating a capsule.

1. Choose a color scheme.

When creating a seasonal collection, the very first thing I do is decide on a color scheme. Last year’s was brown and green with pops of navy, my travel capsule wardrobe was soft neutrals, and this year’s fall palette is once again shades of brown and green with denim mixed in. Not everything in the capsule has to match your color scheme (you’ll see a fun pop of red if you keep scrolling!) But for the most part, it’s a good idea to stick to a color scheme that allows many of the pieces to be mixed and matched seamlessly.

2. Make a list.

After selecting colors, I like to map out the types of items I want to include in the capsule. This will be a bit different for everyone. If you tend to wear lots of dresses during the fall, you could add more of those. If you live in casual wear and loungewear, list out exactly which bottoms and tops you want on heavy rotation, etc. I would advise looking at other curated collections to help navigate your initial list. But for the most part, all fall clothing capsules will include outerwear, sweaters, tops, jeans, dresses, a bag, and shoes.

3. Go through your closet.

Creating a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean you need to push all of your current pieces aside and immediately go shopping. Instead, I would start by looking through the pieces that are already in your closet and pulling out the ones that you think might work. I bet you would be surprised at how many styles you already have on hand!

4. Go shopping.

The last, and possibly most fun, step, is to go shopping! Of course, this isn’t required. You might already have everything you need. But, if you’re like me, you might like freshening up your wardrobe with a few new pieces each season. When shopping for a capsule collection, I always encourage shoppers to invest in quality pieces that will last for many years to come. In the long run, I believe this is worth it.

5. Take care of your clothing.

This step might seem a little strange, but I do think it’s worth mentioning. Capsule clothing is meant to be worn over and over again. In order for that to be feasible, you will want to treat the pieces with care. An iron can go a long way, and having certain items professionally pressed can really elevate the look and provide longevity.

2024 Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Okay, now on to the fun part, my selects for a 2024 fall capsule wardrobe! If you’re looking for classic, quality, and versatile staples to wear this fall, these are my favorites.

Fall Outerwear

Outerwear is a must for any fall outfit. Well, unless you live in Florida, where it’s still very hot in October…but we even get cool days every now and then! I like to have a few different coats, jackets, and blazers to grab as needed.

1. Trench Coat

A classic trench is forever in style. I especially love a khaki trench coat, like this one, which has such a nice fit.

2. Barn Jacket

Barn jackets are everywhere this year, but they have always been a fall staple, in my opinion. A classic Barbour jacket has been a part of my fall capsule wardrobe for many years. And this year, I also grabbed this canvas barn jacket as an updated take on the classic piece! It’s only $60, and the cut is fun, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to give it a shot. I sized up to a medium in this, as I wanted it to fit a little oversized.

3. Plaid Jacket

This plaid jacket from Veronica Beard is gorgeous. While it is pricey, it would be a piece to pull out year after year, making it worth the investment.

4. Blazer

Once again, blazers are showing up everywhere this fall. This oversized longline blazer is a great one to throw on with jeans. I love both color options, a classic navy and hunter green. Side note…Ann Taylor always has great jackets and blazers!

Denim

Next up on my fall capsule wardrobe – jeans! A great pair of denim feels almost synonymous with fall. But, as a 40 year old, I was recently in utter confusion over which denim silhouettes are actually flattering. However, I think I cracked the code with these styles! They have subtle hints of the trends, while still providing a flattering, classic shape. I think the trick with any baggier style of jeans is to wear something more fitted up top, such as a blouse or shirt that you can tuck in.

1. Affordable Jeans

I discovered these Zara high-rise wide-leg jeans while visiting Spain this summer, and I knew instantly they made the cut. At only $50, I love them so much that I purchased them in a few different shades! I can also cuff the bottom of these jeans a bit, which I really like. I sized up in this style for a comfortable fit.

2. Barrel Leg Jeans

The barrel-leg trend was something I thought I could literally never pull off. But, Madewell barrel-leg jeans have me singing a different tune! This pair has a very slight barrel and a flattering high waist. They make me feel cool, but not too young!  I sized down in these.

3. Dressier Jeans

I think a darker, dressier pair of jeans is always great to have on a fall capsule wardrobe. For example, these Veronica Beard wide-leg cuffed jeans are a great option. I can confidently report that are extremely flattering. This pair is great for a nice dinner out, which is exactly what I wore them for last Friday. Just add heels! I bought my normal size in these, but I wish I had sized down, as they are a little big.

4. All Denim Everything

Another trend that I’m loving this season is jean on jean. I love the idea of pairing this denim maxi skirt with this denim vest. Both of these pieces currently happen to be on sale! Keep scrolling to see an image of them paired together.

Fall Tops & Sweaters

Now let’s chat about what tops and sweaters to pair with the jeans. I like to have a variety of tops in a fall clothing capsule, including basic layering styles, classic sweaters, and a few fun trendier pieces.

1. Polo Bear Sweaters

Polo Bear Sweaters are currently trending, and I am here for it! I think these are so iconic and fun. I especially love this green one.

2. Cardigan

A cardigan is a fall and winter staple. I love ones that can be layered on top of other pieces or buttoned up and worn alone, providing more wearing opportunities. This year, I’ve had my eye on this pretty floral cardigan. I love the unique embellishments.

3. Turtleneck Sweater

When it comes to sweaters, an Arlette Turtleneck will always be on my fall capsule wardrobe. They are simply the best!

4. Knit Sweater

I love a lightweight knit sweater during the fall. This polo sweater is a great option, as it could be worn with jeans or trousers.

5. Chunky Knit

Along with a lightweight knit sweater, I would also add a chunkier option. This chunky knit top from Zara is the prettiest hue for fall. I love the gold button details and the fact that it’s classic, but unique!

6. White Tee

I probably should have listed this first, as a white tee is a must for any fall capsule wardrobe. While it is an essential piece any time of the year, it’s especially great for layering in the fall. I’ve recently been reaching for this $9 tee over and over again.

7. Mock Neck

If you’re looking to dip your toes into fall, but it’s still a bit too warm outside, a short sleeve mock neck top might be the solution. This one is great quality and can be worn alone now and layered under sweaters when it cools down.

8. Sweater Jacket or Lady Sweater

Lady sweaters and similar styles have taken the world by storm in recent years, and they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. This neutral sweater jacket has pretty details and looks incredibly cozy.

Fall Dresses

While I sometimes get sad we’re not able to break out fall sweaters at the beginning of the season, wearing fall dresses is one of the perks of the Floridian climate. There are so many pretty styles that I’m currently crushing on!

1. Timeless Midi Dress

I have the Wells Midi Dress in a few different colors and silhouettes. It’s such a timeless and flattering dress, making it absolutely worth the cost per wear! I’m currently eyeing this brown version. The color is great for fall, and I love the capped sleeves.

2. Classic Shirt Dress

You will always find a classic shirt dress on my fall capsule wardrobe (check out last year’s for proof!) It’s such a great piece to wear for multiple occasions. I own this shirt dress in a few different colors, and I love how flattering and easy going it is. Plus, this new shade of red is so good for fall!

3. Pop-of-Color Dress

I have this Julia Amory dress in a light pink, but the chartreuse is calling my name for autumn. It’s such a fun shade!

4. Cocktail Dress

Have a cocktail party this season? Be sure to add something special to your fall clothing capsule. This Cara Cara printed mini dresss would be my pick!

5. Versatile Mini Dress

Lastly, I love a good mini dress. This adorable chestnut brown dress could be paired with heels for a cocktail party or with flats for a daytime look.

Casual Wear & Loungewear

While many of the pieces can be worn casually (for example, these jeans paired with this white tee), I did want to add one cute lounge set for fall, as we have a lot of soccer Saturdays coming our way! When it cools down, I plan on wearing this Air Essentials Set. These pieces are so comfortable and flattering. It’s also great to wear on a travel day!

Fall Shoes

There’s just something about fall shoes that hits differently than all other seasons! I think it’s the big switch from sandals to boots. These are my top five favorites to mix and match this season.

1. Flats

These simple flats are the most comfortable ones I’ve ever worn. Plus, they are beautiful! I love how they pair seamlessly with dresses or jeans.

2. Boots

A classic boot is always going to be in style, which makes a good pair worth investing in! These Margaux ankle boots can be worn year after year. All of the color options are great, but personally, I love the chocolate suede.

3. Sneakers

Every fall clothing capsule needs a good pair of sneakers. These green and brown HOFF sneakers give major fall vibes and coordinate with so many pieces in this capsule.

4. Heels

Don’t forget to add a pair of heels! These chunky brown heels have cute gold details and are perfect for fall.

5. Loafers

Last, but not least, loafers are another fall staple shoe. I love these brown woven loafers. They look great paired with jeans.

Fall Accessories

The final category on my fall capsule wardrobe is accessories. While it’s fun to supplement with trendy or statement accessories here and there, I like to stick to a few classic pieces on heavy rotation. My Longchamp bag has been by my side for years, and continues to be a favorite. I’m also loving this pretty brown handbag. Belts are back again this year, and this brown leather one is a classic. And don’t forget a great pair of sunnies!
