This living room will forever be a challenge for me – it’s rectangular, with a bunch of windows and lots of doors. But I do love the way it has shaped up in the last year. There are still some things I want to do. I think it’s like a puzzle to me, this room. And I have to figure it out . One thing I want to do is replace the Ikea curtains – with something with pattern and color. I’ll likely move these to the dining room, since these are a nicer quality linen from Ikea than the ones I threw up there years ago. Another big change that happened in this room is going from Revere Pewter to White Dove, late last year, and that really brightened things up. It is always incredible what paint can do! Despite being a challenging room to decorate, it’s a really cozy room in the house. I’m writing this on the sofa here, with my coffee, before the kids are up, and the light is starting to come in, and I just love it.
It’s been seven years in this house – and this room has taken on a lot of different personalities. But here are some tips I’ve stuck to over the last couple years:
- Be faithful to your own style, because nothing you truly like is ever out of style – Billy Baldwin // I love this, and think of it often. Things don’t have to fit a certain mold, but they should make you feel happy!
- Collect over time. I feel like unless you are working with a designer and have a hefty budget… things don’t come together over night. You have to be patient.
- Think about how you want this room to feel. For me, I want every room in my house to feel comfortable, welcoming, and approachable. But this room, a touch more elevated than the playroom. I think about how I want it all to feel, when I’m picking fabrics, etc.

Scalloped rattan consoles: These just make me so happy!
