Have you heard of Rush House rugs? Maybe you’ve heard about these handwoven rugs and you’ve wondered if they live up to the hype. Or maybe this is a new-to-you brand, in which case you’re in for a real treat! Living in a home built in the 1920s comes with some challenges, one of them being room sizes and layouts that aren’t “standard” today. This can make decorating a little tricky, especially when it comes to finding rugs that properly fit each room and don’t break the bank. Enter Rush House rugs. Their handmade products are not only beautiful, but they’ve found a way to design custom-sized rugs at an affordable price point! How’d they do it? I’m excited to answer that question today while sharing my honest review of their rugs. I’m also going to highlight a few of my current favorite Rush House products!
About Rush House
Rush House is a wonderful brand that creates handmade collections of rugs, matting, pillows, and accessories made from natural fibers. This small business launched in 2020 and is owned by Liz Strong and Page Mullins. Both of these women have backgrounds in interior design and styling, along with decades of work as style editors at the nation’s top interiors magazines. They used these impressive backgrounds and their natural eye for interior design to create something so special! I love learning about female-founded businesses such as this one – I find them to be so inspiring! Rush House Rugs
With the current popularity of natural fiber rugs, you’re probably wondering what makes Rush House so unique. Well, there are a few things! First, everything at Rush House is made by hand. And their natural fibers aren’t just any run-of-the-mill fiber. Their products are made from carefully selected textiles from Tunisia, Uganda, Morocco, Vietnam, China, Mexico, and beyond. The craftsmanship of each item draws on traditional techniques passed down through generations and offers a glimpse into another part of the world.
Custom-Sized Rugs
However, possibly even more exciting than their high-quality materials is their innovative size-it-yourself rug design. Rush House rugs are made up of one-foot squares woven into a grid pattern, allowing their size to be altered. You can easily snip off increments to achieve a smaller size or sew on additional squares as needed. This is exceptionally helpful when needing to create custom-sized rugs to fit around fireplaces, built-ins, or staircases. Additionally, if you have a larger room in your home, you can sew two rugs together to create an extra large area rug!
How Do Rush House Rugs Work?
Rush House is the first brand that I’ve come across that designs rugs which the shopper can easily cut and sew as needed. Therefore, I was very intrigued at how the process works. It is actually very simple! Here are a few questions I had about my first Rush House rug.
How do I remove squares to achieve the custom-sized rug I want?
The process is surprisingly easy! You simply use scissors to cut the twine that is binding the woven squares together and they come right off. Watch this video to see the removal in action. Be sure to save any squares you remove in case you need them as replacement squares in the future. Bonus…if you cut off enough squares, you can create a runner or door mat with the extras!
How can I add squares to my Rush House rug?
If you’re wanting to make a wider or longer rug, you can add squares using the sew kit and squares that coordinate with your particular product. I promise that sewing squares onto a Rush House rug is incredibly easy even for those of us without significant sewing talents (myself included!) They provide you with all of the information you need to make the process as seamless as possible.
Why would I want a custom-sized rug?
There are many reasons why you might want a custom-sized rug. For us, living in an older home has made it tricky to find area rugs that fit properly – Rush House eliminates that problem. Additionally, you might want a rug that seamlessly fits around objects in your home, such as a staircase or a large bookcase. There are so many possibilities with these rugs!
What happens if I damage a Rush House rug?
One of my favorite benefits to owning a Rush House rug has been knowing that I don’t have to stress if it gets damaged. If someone spills on the rug, a pet has an accident, or it gets damaged during a party, there is no need to fret. I can simply cut off the damaged squares and sew on new ones! It is absolutely genius!
Are these custom-rugs returnable?
Yes! Since Rush House rugs aren’t made-to-order (just adjustable by the shopper upon arrival), you are able to return them for up to 30 days. I always appreciate knowing this is an option if necessary.
Honest Review of Rush House Rugs
We have the Rush House Original Rug in our living room and I absolutely love it! It has been wonderful for all of the reasons I mentioned above. Additionally, it is surprisingly soft, especially with the rug pad underneath! I always worry that natural fiber rugs might be hard or uncomfortable, so this was a pleasant surprise. I also love the way this woven area rug looks in our living room. It is classic, neutral, and timeless! I would definitely recommend Rush House if you’re looking for a high-quality natural fiber rug that has the look of a custom rug, without the hefty price tag.
Rush House Favorites
Rush House has so many beautiful natural fiber rug options, it can be hard to choose just one! The Original Rug is a great basic that will look wonderful in almost any space. I love the beautiful woven design on the Aldama Rug, giving it a bit of a “fancier” look. The Marisol Rug is stunning if you are looking for a handwoven rug in a lighter color. The Annan Rug has a fun floral pattern and pretty ton-toned colors. And if you’re looking for a braided round rug, the Monterey Rug is a classic! I also highly recommend purchasing the rug pad from Rush House, as they are incredibly soft and match the woven rugs perfectly.
Size-It-Yourself Natural Fiber Rugs
I know firsthand how tricky it can be to find the perfect rug for a space. Between the room’s layout, furniture, colors, and rug pricing, there is a lot to consider. I hope this Rush House rug review is helpful if you’re on the hunt for a natural fiber rug.
